Job description

HSE Advisor - Non-Major Projects (Electricity Distribution / Construction)

Make a visible impact on safety outcomes across active project sites.
We're looking for a practical, hands-on HSE Advisor to support non-major project delivery teams across the full project lifecycle - from planning through to execution and close-out.

You'll be the go-to HSE partner on the ground: coaching leaders, working directly with contractors, strengthening compliance, and embedding safer work practices that actually stick.

Role type: 2-year fixed-term (stable engagement)
Scope: Non-major projects up to ~$350k across multiple sites

Purpose of the Role

Provide high-visibility, high-quality HSE support to project teams by coordinating, implementing and improving HSE systems that enable safe, compliant and sustainable delivery. You'll ensure alignment with regulatory obligations and internal HSE/work practice frameworks, while building strong relationships across delivery teams and contractors.

What You'll Be Doing (Key Responsibilities)

1) Practical Project HSE Support

  • Deliver day-to-day HSE coaching and advice to project leaders and contractors to enable safe planning and execution
  • Help develop clear, scalable Project HSE Plans and support implementation on site
  • Influence and uplift capability across teams - hazards, controls, compliance, wellbeing and safe work practices
  • Provide both operational and strategic guidance to strengthen long-term safety ownership in line management

2) Risk, Compliance & Assurance

  • Plan and facilitate risk assessments to ensure project risks are identified and controlled
  • Verify critical controls and risk treatments are in place and working effectively
  • Conduct assurance activities including site inspections, audits, compliance checks and field engagements
  • Drive quality close-out of corrective actions and improvement initiatives
  • Share learnings and best practice across Projects and HSE teams

3) Incidents, Hazards & Learning Culture

  • Promote proactive hazard/near miss reporting in a fair and just culture
  • Support/lead incident investigations (timely, thorough, quality outcomes) including notifications and escalation where required
  • Translate learnings into clear prevention actions and drive continuous improvement

4) Communication & Consultation

  • Communicate key HSE messages clearly and consistently across stakeholders
  • Facilitate meaningful consultation with project leaders, contractors, and workers
  • Present at kick-offs, toolboxes and project reviews
  • Coach leaders to build a culture where people feel safe to speak up and stop unsafe work

5) Stakeholder & Contractor Management

  • Build strong working relationships with Project Leads, contractor leadership/workforce, HSRs, unions, first aiders and HSE peers
  • Participate in relevant meetings: site meetings, toolbox talks, job starts, HSE committees
  • Partner closely with the broader HSE team to deliver aligned and consistent outcomes

What You'll Bring

Qualifications

  • Cert IV in WHS (Diploma desirable)
  • Incident investigation training (ICAM preferred)
  • ISO Lead Auditor (desirable)
  • Environmental Management qualification (desirable)

Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong working knowledge of Victorian OHS legislation and WorkSafe Victoria requirements
  • Solid risk management capability and awareness of construction + electricity distribution hazards
  • Proven experience developing Project HSE Plans, conducting inspections/audits, and driving compliance uplift
  • Confident contractor engagement - consultation, influence, and practical support
  • Background in high-risk operational environments such as:
    • Electricity distribution / sub-transmission
    • Construction, mining, manufacturing, maintenance, oil & gas
    • Capital projects / delivery programs

The Attributes That Matter

You're someone who:

  • Balances competing stakeholder needs and cuts through complexity
  • Acts with urgency, resilience and strong planning discipline
  • Builds trusted relationships and communicates with clarity
  • Has the courage to call out risk and influence change
  • Adapts quickly across different sites, personalities, and operating conditions
