Job description
The Transcription Officer is a casual position responsible for the accurate and timely production of court transcripts. This role supports the development of in-house transcription capabilities and requires strong typing, transcription, proofreading, editing and administrative skills, along with excellent written English, attention to detail and comprehension abilities.
Reporting to the Transcript & Recording Coordinator, the Transcription Officer will produce high-quality transcripts of court proceedings from a variety of audio and video sources. The role requires adherence to established templates, standards and deadlines, while maintaining a strong focus on accuracy, confidentiality and quality assurance.
Key Responsibilities
Transcript Production
- Produce accurate and timely transcripts of court proceedings from audio, video and live recordings.
- Apply judgement to resolve routine transcription issues and escalate complex matters where required.
- Ensure transcripts are completed in accordance with court standards, templates and turnaround timeframes.
Quality Assurance
- Review, edit and proofread transcripts to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance with court requirements.
- Identify recurring issues, trends or errors that may impact quality, productivity or service delivery.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance transcription processes and outcomes.
Records Management
- Manage, catalogue and securely store recordings and transcripts in accordance with legislative requirements, court policies and information security standards.
- Assist in identifying risks, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement in records and information management practices.
You will demonstrate:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to accurately transcribe audio recordings and produce high-quality written documentation.
- Excellent attention to detail and proofreading skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and other relevant digital applications.
- A minimum typing speed of 70 words per minute.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise competing tasks and meet deadlines.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- A proactive approach to supporting process improvements and operational efficiencies.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working within a court, tribunal or legal environment.
- Previous experience in audio transcription, dictation or related transcription services.
- Experience working with confidential or sensitive information.
- Australian Citizenship - applicants must be Australian citizens and reside in Australia.
- Police Check and Security Clearance - successful applicants must satisfy a Police Records Check and may be required to obtain and maintain relevant security clearances.
